Horse Super Suits for Olympics 2012

Professional athletes work their body to the extreme and many athletes are now harnessing new fabric technology which allows them to speed up their body's recovery. Compression suits are worn during training and after athletes perform. They look like wet suits and are made of special moisture management material which applies pressure to the body and regulates temperature.

Hidez modifies suits for horses
Horses are athletes too and are pushed to their limits, especially when they compete at high levels. The Australian company, Hidez have recently developed a recovery suit for horses. The Hidez Recovery Suits help to reduce the horse's recovery time by:

Enhancing the blood flow back to the heart
Helping to supply more oxygen to muscles to enhance muscle activity
Flushing out waste products such as lactic acid from the blood supply

Miracle manure for balding men

Gardeners swear by rotted horse manure for making plants grow, horse owners have always gladly passed along horse manure to allotments and gardeners. Well its not just plants that manure helps to grow, according to scientists in America, horse manure will help human hair grow too!

A group of Horticultural scientists were working on a formula for an organic crop fertiliser when they stumbled across a recipe for hair growth using horse manure. One of the scientists had horses and was experimenting with liquidised horse manure. As a practical joke his colleagues added the liquid manure to his hair shampoo at the shower facilities within the horticultural college they worked at. Unknowingly the balding scientist used the manure on his head for 2 months, after which he noticed considerable hair growth. The combination of horse manure and secret herbs in the shampoo had a dramatic effect in revitalising the previously dormant hair follicles in the scalp. Dr Adam Mizhen said, "I first started to go bald at a young age of 23". "When I found out about my colleagues practical joke I was angry but then realised that the combination of the shampoo and fertilise formula had triggered hair growth on my head, so I was over the moon!"

The hair growth shampoo will be sold in America from June 2012 and is due to reach the UK by early 2013.

Will we ever go back to real horse power?

With current fuel prices rising and the resounding fear that our fuel resources will eventually run out, it begs the question - should we have been so eager to move from horse power to engine power? In today's fast paced life and overpopulated urban spaces, its hard to imagine ever going back to the thundering of hooves in our streets rather than the roar of engines.

A bit of Horse History
So why did we move from horse power to engines? Once upon a time a long, long time ago in the late 1800s, horses were the main mode of transport for people and for industry. The horse had carried us and pulled us and our freight for thousands of years, which was fine until populations grew, industry grew and so did the horse population. Sounds like heaven to us horse fans doesn't it? Well the picture was very different back then, instead of thinking 'National Velvet' galloping through the countryside on your way to work, think more 'Black Beauty' in the bad days when he was pulling a coal cart! Horse pollution had become a problem with the busy towns rapidly filling with horse manure and urine, flies and stench became a big problem. Author, Eric Morris stated "Wet weather turned the streets into swamps and rivers of muck,but dry weather brought little improvement; the manure turned to dust, which was then
whipped up by the wind, choking pedestrians and coating buildings." (1) The problem was growing at such a rate that The Times of London predicted that by 1950 every street would be buried nine feet deep in horse manure, not a pleasant thought even for the most avid horse fan! Horse carcasses were piling up (not a nice thought) and as if that wasn't bad enough, horse cruelty was also common with horses overworked, underfed and beaten regularly.

Feed costs for the horse population
These hard working urban horses needed feeding, which brought about another problem with horse transportation. They estimated that one horse would consume 1.4 tons of oats and 2.4 tons of hay per year! One farmer calculated that each horse consumed the product of five acres of land, enough to feed up to 8 people back in them days before McDonalds was invented!

So it paints a dismal picture of our world full of horses back then and thats without going into all the horse accidents, congestion and noise pollution. I think we get the picture, it was pretty grim.

Progress for horse and human
Things started to get a bit more organised and improvements were made for both horses and people. Animal protection organisations started to emerge to improve the lives of working horses. The street sweeping services improved, making streets more sanitary and safer. By the 20th century road rules had been invented which reduced the chaos and danger of the roads (depending on who's on them as always). Asphalt roads replaced cobbled streets and private motor vehicles eventually replaced the horse.

The cost of horse transport
It was calculated that it was cheaper to own and run a car than a horse drawn vehicle. By 1912 there were more cars than horses. Today there are about 31 million cars in the UK (2) in contrast to the 1.3 million horses, with 17 horses to every 1000 people. (3)

Cost of horse ownership today
The cost of keeping a horse today is between £2,000 and £10,000 per year(5). Your average car costs £5,869 a year to run (4). However, if you already have horses to feed and exercise then using them as a means of transport could save you time and money. Although it would be nice to use your own
leisure horses to plod to the shops to save on fuel, having horses as the primary means of transport isn't the pretty picture I had painted in my head for so many years. The harsh reality has smacked me in the face and made me feel quite glad that the horse is now mainly for leisure rather than work. And, as I am about to climb into my car to drive to see my expensive but priceless horse, I feel lucky to have a practical mode of transport to use and abuse without worry, leaving me the chance to love and care for my precious equine waiting patiently for my arrival.

New Bucas Fly and Cooler Blanket

As the fly season approaches we start to look at how we can protect our horses from the pesky flies. One problem you get when you are in between classes at shows or competitions is your horse being irritated by flies. Not good when you want your horse to focus!

Bucas have just launched a new fly rug with this problem in mind. The new bucas Buzz-Off Cooler is a fly rug and cooler combined. The features include:

The verdict?
This could be a boot to try if your horse is barefoot and you want a boot that is easy to put on and take off but still provides protection and comfort for your horse. We use the Easyboot Glove on our horse and he goes really well in it, you can't even tell he has them on. However, they can be a bit tricky to get on and off sometimes when his feet are getting ready for a trim. To be able to use a boot that is as well fitted as the Glove but easy to get on and off would in my opinion be the ideal solution.
Has anyone tried these boots yet? Let us know what you think.

New mud fever treatment from Lincoln

Its that time of year again when the battle to prevent and treat mud fever commences for horse owners throughout the UK.

Once your horse becomes infected with mud fever you need to act fast to treat it to prevent the condition from becoming worse and potentially leading to lameness and in severe cases having to have the horse put to sleep to prevent further suffering.

So here's the good news
Researchers at the University of Lincoln claim to have developed an effective therapy to treat mud fever. They have conducted trials to test the effectiveness of mud fever treatment on horses. The trials were successful, which led to the University having the treatment manufactured through Battles based in Lincoln. The new product range is called 'Muddy Buddy Mud Kure', which specifically treats the lesions and sores caused by mud fever. Frank Ruedisueli, the Programme Leader and Senior Lecturer in Bio-Veterinary Science at the University said: “Over the past five years staff and students at the University of Lincoln have been investigating potential topical anti-microbial treatments for this disease. In-vitro testing of a specific active ingredient under laboratory conditions resulted in a new formulation. This was then trialled on horses with severe or stubborn cases of the condition in a nationwide field study.” The anti-microbial products come in two forms, a powder and a cream. The powder is ideal for puffing onto wounds that are too sensitive to touch and the cream can be applied to the horse once they are less sensitive. The University claims that it will only take a few days for the sore mud fever wounds to become less sensitive once horse owners start to apply the Mud Kure powder.
A customer testimonial
Horse owner Sharon Macadam tried the products on her fourteen-year-old Dutch Warm blood, Punica, who developed mud fever in the Autumn of 2009. Punica had scabs on her back legs which got progressively worse over the following weeks, making it uncomfortable for her to lie down and walk around. Sharon said: “Every time Punica moved her legs the skin would split and it was obvious that this was very painful for her. I tried treatments from the vet and almost everything on the market but to no avail. It was heart breaking to see her in such pain and I was seriously at the point of having her put to sleep.” Within the first week of taking part in the field trials, Sharon noticed a big improvement in Punica’s condition and, after the first month, the legs were no longer splitting as much and she was able to do some light ridden work with her. “From then on it got better every week and Punica’s mud fever has since been kept at bay,” she said.

Prevention is always better than the cure
The best thing horse owners can do is to prevent mud fever occurring in the first place. Prevention of mud fever can include:

Hosing off mud every day when you bring your horse in, then drying off the legs to prevent chapping.
Applying a barrier cream or powder or using turnout socks to prevent the mud from sitting on the horse's skin throughout the day.

New Audio Schooling Lessons

Many people (myself included) know that they need to school their horse but tend to either;
soon get bored,
need some structure,
or simply need guidance when schooling.
The new audio lessons from Sound Schooling may help.

What is it?
There are a variety of equestrian schooling lessons available for riders to download as MP3 files so that they can then listen to them while they school their horse. The lessons currently include:

Basic warm up
Basic schooling patterns
Intro to squares and counter-canter
Developing the transitions
Starting the leg yield
Developing suppleness and impulsion
Using squares, medium canter and rein-back

Each download costs £4.99 . The length of the audio track varies from 14 minutes to 23 minutes.

The lessons are optimised for use in a 20 x 40m school. Once you have purchased and downloaded the MP3 file, simply save to your computer and then transfer it to your MP3 player / I Pod.

This seems like a good idea for riders who need a bit of direction when schooling and would make a great gift for horsey friends and family.

New Easyboot Wide Glove Hoof boot

For horse owners who have their horse barefoot or are thinking of making the barefoot transition for their horse, hoof boots are a very handy piece of equipment. The Easyboot glove has proven a popular hoof boot, they are lightweight and just as the name implies, fit like a second skin to the horse's hooves. Our very own Equine Compare horse (Bertie pictured left) uses hoof boots quite happily.

Due to the close fit of the boots they were unsuitable for horses with wider than longer hooves or for horses with round hooves and wide heels. Easyboot have addressed this problem by launching a wide fit boot available August 2011.

The new wide hoof boot usually fits up to approx 10mm wider than the horse's hoof length. Fitting kits are available to hire which will save you time and money in the long run as you avoid sending pairs of boots back to the retailer until you get an exact fit. Yes you read it right, a qualified horse whisperer in Merseyside is offering his services free of charge to horse owners in the UK. Alan Dawber is a 'horse whisperer' specialising in horse rehabilitation.

Why doesn't Alan charge horse owners?
Its hard not to be a bit suspicious of freebies these days so this was the first question I had for Alan. He said "I offer my services for free because I love horses and wish to help them recover and train owners how better to communicate with their horse. I offer the service Free so that everyone can have the benefit of Horse Whisperer non violent methods not just wealthy people, as most Horse whisperers charge £40.00 per hour plus 40p mile travel." He went on to say "there's no catch and no strings attached, I have never charged to rehabilitate a horse even though people have thrown money in my car in the past! I simply give it back."

Is Alan any good at horse whispering?
Alan has an array of horsemanship qualifications under his belt which include Intelligent Horsemanship qualifications covering horse psychology, handling the untouched horse and leading and loading. He said "This is my third year of horse whispering, I work 7 days a week 52 weeks a year and have successfully rehabilitated hundreds and hundreds of horses, all different breeds from Thoroughbreds to Shetlands." The credentials are there and as he is offering a free service, what have you got to loose?

Areas Alan covers
Alan is prepared to travel as far as possible to attend distressed horses, within reason. He said " If I can't get to a horse due to the distance, I then call on other Intelligent Horsemanship and other horse trainers to help the horse owner instead."

This man seems to genuinely want to help horses and is devoting his life doing it without financial gain. That is rare these days and very commendable. My hat goes off to this man who clearly loves horses and is in a position where he can devote all of his time and energy to help horse s and of course the horse owners to communicate and solve problems in a kind and gentle way. This kind of story is a breath of fresh air for horse owners who have to face the ever increasing cost of horse ownership.
