The transition to barefoot for horse owners can be a tough one. Hoof boots seem to be the answer, with brands such as Cavallo, Easy Boot and Scoot Boot all offering solutions for horse owners wanting to go barefoot. But hoof boots can be problematic for some horses, with owners struggling to find hoof boots which don't rub, are easy to fit and remove and stay on in all terrains.

Could Megasus Horse Runners be the answer?

So what makes them different?

High-Vis Mega-Pro tape protects the Mega-Lock velcro

The Horserunners are plastic horse shoes which velcro onto your horse's hoof . The velcro (Meg-Lock Tape) is extremely strong, which is stuck to your horse's hoof, even when the runners are not in use, i.e. in the paddock.. When you aren't using the runners you cover the velcro with a high vis tape (Mega-Pro Tape) to keep the velcro clean.

When you tack up to ride you simply take the protective (Mega-Pro Tape) covers off the velcro and fix the runners in place. You will of course need to remove and replace the velcro as your horse's hooves grow. Megasus say "The Mega-Lock tape remains approximately 3 weeks on the hoof and is protected with a protection foil during the time the hoof goes bare. The foil has a sealing lip similar to swimming goggles, so that the Mega-Lock tape is prevented from water and dirt intrusion."

But will it work in the UK?

Well let's hope so! UK horse owners battle with mud every year. Will the velcro strips hold up to horses stood in mud? Are they mega enough for our mud? The mud that can suck loose horse shoes off, not to mention our wellies! Have Magesasus accounted for this? According to Megasus, "Mega-Lock tape remains to the hoof and is protected by the Mega-Pro tape (foil with sealing lips)". Sounds good in theory, but we expect some hesitation from UK horse owners, who will no doubt want to sit back and wait to see how the Megasus Horserunners fare in soggy Britain.

Back Megasus HorseRunners

I for one am excited about this new innovation and hope that they do the job over here as well as they clearly do in Austria and the U.S. And others agree, after just 6 days of their Kickstarter campaign, Megasus reached their funding target of £100,000 on Kickstarter. If you believe that these could be the solution for your horse going barefoot, you can get a special pre-production price of £94 per pair when you buy through Kickstarter. saving you £28. Megasus HorseRunners are set to be available from July 2017.

This 'smart headcollar' is the first innovation to incorporate biometric technology into horse wear. The sensors built into the headcollar to constantly monitor and analyse your horse's biometrics. Any abnormalities or signs of distress will be reported back to the horse owner's smart phone, alerting them to a potential problem with their horse.
For the first time, horse owners can remotely monitor their horse's health, reassured by the 24/7 alert which could detect early signs of colic or other serious conditions. For horses turned out, the horse can wear a safety collar instead of the headcollar.
Hate filling hay nets?

This is the one job I don't enjoy. It is dusty, laborious and time consuming. If you have more than one horse, it will take a big chunk of your time. So I decided that I would make an easy fill, super quick hay net feeder for our horses.

This feeder gives you the equivalent volume of 6 large hay nets, but only takes seconds to fill.

Important Note - All of our horses are barefoot, which is why our nets can hang low. If your horse is shod, please hang the nets higher so that shoes don't get caught in the net.

What you need

2 x metal posts - these could be curtain poles or whatever you have to hand. We bought 1.8m / 6ft oval poles from B&Q something like this.

Fixings: Our hay feeder is secured with bolts and wing nuts. I have since found this a little fiddly to align to fasten the feeder. I recommend that you use a couple of old straps or some brackets to fasten your poles back up again. I will add to the blog soon to show you my modifications.

Large haynets x 6 or 6ft x 6ft of hockey net.

I cut up my old haynets and tied them together. If you find it fiddly to tie them you could use small tie wraps.

A drill / electric screwdriver

What you do

1) Drill two holes in your poles, each 2 inch away from the end.

2) If you are using old hay nets, you need to cut the nets so that they are flat. Remove the metal rings and any tie rope. Tie together 4 nets so that they are side ways on, giving you more width than height. They should sit together in a grid of 2 x 2, to make a large rectangle.

3) Thread the top of the net net over one of the poles so that it is hanging down. Secure the ends with tie wraps through the drilled holes. This stops the net from moving.

3) Thread the other end of the net (the bottom) through the other pole and secure with tie wraps as before.

4) Take your other two haynets and cut them open so that they lay flat. These are the sides of your hay feeder. Put your poles together so that the net hanging down forms a bag. You will see that hay will escape from the sides. You need to attach your remaining nets to each end so that the hay stays in the net. Attach the nets length ways so that they give plenty of width so you can open your feeder wide to fill.

You should now have a purse shaped, very large hay net attached to two poles.

5) Take the back / furthest away pole and bolt it to your stable wall / barn wall / field shelter wall.

6) Secure the pole nearest to you with your fixings.

7) The side nets can have rope from your old hay nets threaded through them to tighten up the slack.

There you go, simply unfasten the front bar, open and pile in the hay. Fasten up again and voilà! Your horses will have lots of hay to munch and you will hay to munch and you will save oodles of time every day.

Horse licks can have advantages as horses in theory take as much as they need, when they need it. It is however, important to read the ingredients on horse licks to make sure that it isn't packed with sweet ingredients such as molasses, especially when you have a greedy horse or pony. Rockies are primarily salt and minerals, unlike many licks which contain molasses. We are awaiting comment from Rockies for sugar content of these new products. Watch this space.

Like most horse owners, I have tried
different beddings and am always on the look out for an economical
and time saving solution that will help me get through the winter
with 'Dirty Bertie'. As his nick name suggests, Bertie is quite a wet
horse in the stable, which has meant that straw, although the most
economical to use, isn't absorbent enough and shavings proved too
expensive for such a wet stable. So after my friend told me about
Flax Core, I thought I would give it a try.

My Top Tips:

Disturb the bed as little as possible.
Use marigold gloves to pick up the droppings by hand daily. Don't use
a shavings fork to skip out.

Sprinkle hand fulls of Flax over the wee
patch to freshen it up without using too much bedding

I found it easier to use a shovel for
taking the wet out of the middle rather than a shavings fork as the
bed is compact and the fork catches on my stable mats.

Making the bed

I aimed for a deep
litter bed with the Flax Core to save time. For my 10ft x 12ft
stable,

with matting I used 7 bales of Flax Core at around £7 per
bale. This gave me a decent size bed with banks of adequate depth. I
think if I didn't have decent stable mats, I would have easily used
8 bales.

The first thing I noticed was the
lovely smell, everyone in my barn commented on how nice the bed smelt
when they walked past, to which I replied “It won't smell like that
in the morning”. I honestly didn't think it would be any better
than shavings and expected to find a smelly, wet bed in the morning.

The morning after

Pleasantly surprised! No smell of
ammonia and after a full night in, I couldn't even see any wet
patches. I picked up the droppings using marigolds and used a rubber feed skip so that I could crouch down and then load the wheel barrow. This saved a lot of time and allowed me to skip out while Bertie was still in the stable. After skipping out, I went home and let my husband do a sniff test! I used to come home reeking of ammonia after skipping out but I couldn't smell it on me and neither could my husband. Result!

The full muck out

After almost two weeks the wet patch in the middle started to show through and it looked like it needed a full muck out. I began by scraping the clean layer of Flax from the wee patch in the middle of the bed,

uncovering the wet bedding. At first I used a shavings fork to dig out the wet but found this was hard going. So I used my shovel instead and it was much easier. A few smelly barrow fulls later, the wet was removed. I moved the old bedding into the middle and added a bale of new Flax around the edges so that the bedding didn't get stale around the edges.

Hemp Technology who manufacture the
bedding recommend two ways of using Flax Core bedding effectively You can have a deep litter bed like I have or have a thin layer over rubber mats, which you muck out every day.

I later discovered that the bedding smells so nice because it is has citronella in it. Neil Crow from Hemp Technology who make Flax Core, said, "We add Citronella to the bedding as the smell helps to deter rodents and citronella has anti-fungal properties. This makes the bedding especially beneficial to the barefoot horse."

The final word

I would, and have recommend this bedding to other horse owners, as long as they don't treat it like a shavings bed and try digging it out regularly. If you leave the bed undisturbed, a deep litter bed will stay clean and fresh for 1 - 2 weeks, depending on your horse. It is by far, the most absorbent bedding I have tried on Bertie so far. Its also an added advantage that you can start introducing Flax Core to your existing shavings bed without having to throw out your bedding, so its easy to give it a try without spending a fortune.

Ground blocks - all horse arcs now sit on Eco Grid blocks, preventing contact with the ground and making the horse arc last even longer. (Included in the price)

Easy Tow System

Normally you would have to pay between £300 - £600 for skids to allow you to tow a heavy field shelter with a tractor or 4 x 4. You would also need to wait until the ground was firm enough to move the shelter, good luck with that with the wet British weather! Alfresco Arch have come up with a clever and low cost solution. The Horse Arc Easy Tow System consists of:

8" Pressure Treated Timbr Skids

Removable Tow Bar

Eco Grid tracks

When you are ready to move your arc, you simply attach the tow bar, lay the Eco Grid matting tracks in front of the arc and glide the arc over the tracks. Simple!
Cost
£200 for the Medium Arc
£250 for the Large Arc.

The first person to order an Arc and towing system this month gets this special discount, only one available and 50% deposit required within the next couple of weeks to allow the Horse Arc team to come and build the arc and take photgraphs.
Man made shelters usually come as a 'shed like' structure which, if poorly constructed or situated in the wrong spot, can fall prey to strong winds and leaky roofs.

One company, 'Pan Products Ltd' have come up with a clever idea for a totally new concept of field shelters. Forget shed shaped shelters..introducing the world's only two sided building that can withstand impact of horses and 80mph winds!
Equine Scientists and the National Trust have helped develop the new Horse Arc with Pan Products, who are based in Lincoln.

What is a Horse Arc?
Its an arc shaped, open ended field shelter, which can be built to a size you need for your horses.

The horse arc solves some of the common problems horse owners can have with traditional field shelters:

My horse won't use the shelter / gets pushed out by other horses
The arc is open ended, which means horses feel more comfortable entering the shelter, they don't feel as closed in, which goes against their natural flight instinct. It also avoids the danger of a member of the herd being trapped in a shelter and injured by another horse. It also easily accommodates more horses in a smaller space, similar to a herd of horses all sheltering under a tree.
Extreme weather and exposed fields, damaging shelters
What you don't want is a shelter which will get damaged in the wind and scare or even injure your horse. Try getting them to use the shelter then! The unique arc design makes it extremely weather resistant because the rain and snow simply slide off the sides, with no guttering required and no need to re-felt your shelter after high winds. The wind flows over the smooth arc shape rather than hitting a solid wall straight on. The arcs are secured to the ground using concrete blocks.
Planning Permission
We all want to protect our lovely countryside, but PP can be a real pain sometimes! The Arc is classed as a temporary structure and can be moved, so PP isn't required.
New Easy Move Towing System
The arcs are lightweight compared to a traditional horse shelter and easy to move. You simply unscrew the arc at its centre so that it is in two pieces. You then get a group of willing volunteers to help carry the arc sides to your next spot. The clever designers at Alfresco Arch have recently added a new towing system to the arc as an optional extra. For just an extra £200 you get wooden skids, a detachable towing bar and Eco Grid track to lay down in front of the arc. This makes it easy to move the arc across muddy fields, no more waiting for the ground to dry up!
Kids like to get dirty, especially if they are pony mad! Childs Farm recently launched their range of organic toiletries to help parents get their kids clean and smelling great! We selected 10 testers with either pony mad or outdoor loving children to put the products through their paces...
The test
10 people tested the Childs Farm gift boxes

The rating - 49 out of 50!

Out of the 10 people who tried the products, 9 gave them the maximum rating of 5 stars and one gave them 4 stars, way to go Childs Farm!

The good
Our testers raved about the great fruity smell of the products and loved the quirky packaging. The hair products left the kid's hair shiny, soft and tangle free. No more tugging at those lugs mums!
The bad
I testers struggled with finding any negative points. Some testers thought that the ease of opening the packaging could be improved and that the price was a little high but would buy as a gift or just use sparingly.
The verdict
8 out of 10 testers have either bought more of the products already or will be doing so in the future. They also thought that the gift boxes make ideal gifts.

Gold star for Childs Farm, our testers love them. Have you tried the Childs Farm range? The British Equestrian ID Service helps to give horse riders piece of mind, especially when riding alone and away from home.

What is BEIDS?
BEIDS is an Emergency Identification Service for horse and rider. The rider wears a wristband and the horse has a saddle tag. Both show a 24/7 emergency response telephone number and a unique reference for the horse and rider. If someone finds a fallen rider or loose horse with the ID attached, they can easily call the freephone number and quote the reference to the BEIDS response team. They will then relay any medical information to emergency services and next of kin will be informed of the incident.

How much?
From £10 for an ID then £15 membership renewal cost after a year.
The IDs:
Rider Wristband - £10
Saddle Tag - £10
Hat/Mobile Property Badges - £10
or choose a bundle:
Wristband & Saddle Tag - £17
Wristband, Saddle Tag & Property Badges - £22
3 x Wristbands & 2 x Hat Badges - £38

Win a BEIDS ID
Spend 5 minutes answering a few questions about you and your horse and you could win a BEIDS ID, including 12 months membership. There's 50 to win so the odds are in your favour. Click here then select 'Start Survey'. Good luck and stay safe.
One of the scientists had horses and was experimenting with liquidised horse manure. As a practical joke his colleagues added the liquid manure to his hair shampoo at the shower facilities within the horticultural college they worked at. Unknowingly the balding scientist used the manure on his head for 2 months, after which he noticed considerable hair growth. The combination of horse manure and secret herbs in the shampoo had a dramatic effect in revitalising the previously dormant hair follicles in the scalp. Dr Adam Mizhen said, "I first started to go bald at a young age of 23". Once upon a time a long, long time ago in the late 1800s, horses were the main mode of transport for people and for industry. The horse had carried us and pulled us and our freight for thousands of years, which was fine until populations grew, industry grew and so did the horse population. Sounds like heaven to us horse fans doesn't it? Well the picture was very different back then, instead of thinking 'National Velvet' galloping through the countryside on your way to work, think more 'Black Beauty' in the bad days when he was pulling a coal cart! Horse pollution had become a problem with the busy towns rapidly filling with horse manure and urine, flies and stench became a big problem. Author, Eric Morris stated "Wet weather turned the streets into swamps and rivers of muck, but dry weather brought little improvement; the manure turned to dust, which was then
whipped up by the wind, choking pedestrians and coating buildings." (1) The problem was growing at such a rate that The Times of London predicted that by 1950 every street would be buried nine feet deep in horse manure, not a pleasant thought even for the most avid horse fan! Horse carcasses were piling up (not a nice thought) and as if that wasn't bad enough, horse cruelty was also common with horses overworked, underfed and beaten regularly.

Feed costs for the horse population
These hard working urban horses needed feeding, which brought about another problem with horse transportation. They estimated that one horse would consume 1.4 tons of oats and 2.4 tons of hay per year! One farmer calculated that each horse consumed the product of five acres of land, enough to feed up to 8 people back in them days before McDonalds was invented!

So it paints a dismal picture of our world full of horses back then and thats without going into all the horse accidents, congestion and noise pollution. I think we get the picture, it was pretty grim.

Progress for horse and human
Things started to get a bit more organised and improvements were made for both horses and people. Animal protection organisations started to emerge to improve the lives of working horses. The street sweeping services improved, making streets more sanitary and safer. By the 20th century road rules had been invented which reduced the chaos and danger of the roads (depending on who's on them as always). Asphalt roads replaced cobbled streets and private motor vehicles eventually replaced the horse.

The cost of horse transport
It was calculated that it was cheaper to own and run a car than a horse drawn vehicle. By 1912 there were more cars than horses. Today there are about 31 million cars in the UK (2) in contrast to the 1.3 million horses, with 17 horses to every 1000 people. A family from Essex use their horses and carriage to run their kids to school and pick up groceries (Read Article)

Although it would be nice to use your own
leisure horses to plod to the shops to save on fuel, having horses as the primary means of transport isn't the pretty picture I had painted in my head for so many years. The harsh reality has smacked me in the face and made me feel quite glad that the horse is now mainly for leisure rather than work. And, as I am about to climb into my car to drive to see my expensive but priceless horse, I feel lucky to have a practical mode of transport to use and abuse without worry, leaving me the chance to love and care for my precious equine waiting patiently for my arrival.
Kelly Jackson - Co Founder
EquineCompare.co.uk - the equestrian comparison site
Compare .
